(Requires two adult leaders to perform this skit. You will need an ice cooler on rollers filled with a bag of ice, large spoon, and a jug of water. You will also need a bag containing a child-friendly Bible and cups.)

Person 1: (carries bag with cups and Bible. Greet children, introduce yourself, then look around for helper) I’m not sure where my helper is today, but . . .

Person 2: (runs into room flustered, with rolling ice cooler) Hold up, I’m here! I had to get the ice. (Proceeds to open the cooler and uses spoon to chip at ice)

Person 1: What in the world are you doing?

Person 2: What do you mean? You said we were going to do an ice-breaker first!

Person 1: Oh my word. Don’t you know what an ice breaker is?

Person 2: Um . . . maybe . . . I thought I did?

Person 1: An icebreaker is a way to help people feel more comfortable. Sometimes when we’re new to something, like today’s class, we can be so scared that we might feel frozen and not like are real selves.

Person 2: (proudly) Oh, I get it! So they can chill out.

Person 1: (rolls eyes) Uh-no...an ice breaker is a way for people to warm up to one another, so they can get to know each other and become friends. Friendship is very important. The Bible has a lot to say about it. In fact, friendship is so important that God wants to be friends with us! Listen to this:

(Removes Bible from bag and reads John 15:13-15.)

When we trust in Jesus as our Savior, he calls us his friends! How amazing is that? And because we can be forever friends with God, he wants us to be friends with one another!

Person 2: Well, what does that have to do with breaking the ice? How are we going to get to know one another today?

Person 1: What else do you got it in that cooler?

Person 2: Water.

Person 1: Perfect! I’ve got cups. Here’s what we’re going to do. Everyone will get into groups of 2-4 people, and then we’ll give everyone a cup of ice water and some questions to answer.

(Have children sit down in small groups and distribute cups with ice water)

Person 2: Ok, I get it. I'll take it from here! Kids, take turns in your groups answering the following questions, and each time you answer you must take a small sip of water.

(You might provide each group with the questions on note cards or write them on the board):

1. What’s your name?
2. Where do you go to school?
3. What’s your favorite subject in school?
4. What’s your favorite activity?
5. What’s your favorite food?

Person 1: That was a great way to get to know one another! When we’re curious about other people, and what their interests are, that’s the beginning of friendship!

Let’s pray: “Dear Jesus, thank you for calling us your friends when we trust in you as our Savior. Help us to be friends with one another. Amen.”
