"For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba,
Father" Romans 8:15 (KJV).
I had been teaching my bright-eyed granddaughter about Jesus. She looked at a poster of Him and the children gathered about Him, and she pointed out representations of her and her brother in the picture. During a recent visit, she pointed to Jesus. "He my daddy," she said with glee. "He my daddy." That opened the conversation to Jesus' Father being our daddy in heaven. Through the eyes of a young child came an opportunity to understand that God is personal and that Jesus called Him
"Abba," an Aramaic word meaning "daddy."
At her age, she doesn't understand the Holy Spirit, or freedom from sin and fear, but this precious child knows that God can be like her daddy. If taught well, she will learn that Jesus is much more than human. But for now, she has made a connection that can empower the beginning of a personal relationship with Almighty God.
Whatever our age, when a person can grasp the idea that God is approachable through Jesus, then God the Father is no longer distant from us. When God becomes like family to us, we begin to understand that even though He is the holiest, He wants kinship with us. He desires that we become His spiritual children
-- brothers and sisters of Jesus. My little tot will learn that she can relate to her Father in heaven as easily as she does to her earthly daddy, and that she can bring to Him her every care and concern, because Jesus lives within her heart. Most importantly, she will learn that her spiritual Father loves her in a holy and special way.
Let's make sure to see our "Abba, Father" through Jesus, who can live in each one's heart.
Prayer: Dear Father God, thank You for loving us so much that You let Your Son Jesus pay the price for our sins, so that through His purity, righteousness, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, we can approach You as "Abba, Father." Amen.
