30 Days of Thanksgiving

Ideas to Inspire Thankful Hearts

gratitude ideas for Thanksgiving

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
2 Cor. 9:15 (NIV)

November is upon us and it's a mad dash to Christmas, so it seems, with Thanksgiving squeezed between and almost forgotten. (This is most evident in stores where Halloween and Christmas decorations stock the shelves at the same time. Ug!)

However, I think it's rather appropriate that November is the month before we celebrate the birth of God's indescribable gift—his beloved Son! Now this is something for which we can be thankful!

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (NIV)

What better way to begin the celebration of Christmas than with hearts of gratitude and thanksgiving expressed during the entire month of November!

Here are some ideas to inspire thankful hearts:

1) Thank God for the Saints* who led you to the Lord or who have strengthened and encouraged you in your faith. "Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God" Philippians 1:3 (NLT). Take some time to write notes of thanksgiving to them. And if someone has graduated to heaven, you can still write a note and tuck it in your Bible.
2) Make a Thanksgiving Chain
3) Serve in a Soup Kitchen, "As you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me" Matthew 25:40 (ESV)
4) Challenge kids and their families to memorize FIVE thanksgiving Bible verses, one for each week in November, such as: "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name" Psalm 100:4 (NIV)
5) Write thank you notes to people in the military, or to your pastors and school teachers.

*The word Saint means consecrated, set apart, holy, pure. Throughout Scripture, Saint is a designation given to God's faithful people here on earth and in heaven. Saints are God-ordained, and not designated by man. To be a Saint is to be separated from the world system and devoted to the worship and service of God. The meaning of Saints is more fully developed in the New Testament, whereby Believers are called Saints—those who have trusted in Jesus as their Savior, having been forgiven of their sins, and who continue to live in faith through the Holy Spirit's power. (See 1 Samuel 2:9; Psalm 30:4, 116:15; Daniel 7:18; Acts 9:32; Romans 1:7; Ephesians 1:15-19; Colossians 1:12; Jude 1:3; Revelation 18:24.)
