Focus: To understand the words Conformed and Transformed from Romans 12:2. (To illustrate the two words you will need a lump of clay and a Transformer Toy.)
(Items to be placed in a bag or tote: Clay, Transformer
toy, Bible.)
Remove Bible from bag and read Romans 12:2, And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
(Take out the clay and begin pressing it.)
Ask children if they know what it means to be conformed
and transformed?
As you explain the word, conformed, repeat the verse, ". . . be not
conformed . . . ," which means we are not to be shaped by the world around
us.
(As you press the clay, show class how you make it "conform" to the pressure of your hands.)
We can be negatively conformed—that is changed by the world in the wrong ways—sometimes by the friends we hang around with, the shows we watch, or by what we listen to or read. In fact, if we don't stay close to Jesus, then it is likely that we'll be conformed or shaped by the world in the wrong ways. We can feel pressured to go along with the crowd, rather than follow Jesus.
(Take out the Transformer car toy and ask children to describe it. Now rearrange the parts so that it is "transformed" into the new object.)
Now what is it? The toy was changed into something new—it was "transformed" into a new creature!
The Bible says when we trust in Jesus as our Savior and Forever Friend, we too are
transformed—we're changed into new people, because God rearranges our hearts and
minds to begin to look like him. And as we read and study God's Word, we grow in our faith, and become more and more like Jesus in the way we think, behave, and treat others. We are
conformed to look like Jesus, and this is pleasing to God!
(Allow children to transform clay into their own creations.)
Close in prayer.
