Parable of the Five Talents Drama | by Debra Halleck
5 Characters: Narrator, Christ, Mr. Lamb, Mr. Kidd, Receptionist
Narrator: “Now after a long time the Master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. And the one who had received the five talents came up and brought five more talents, saying ‘Master, you entrusted five talents to me, see, I have gained five more.’ His master said to him ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master” Matthew 25:19-21
[Curtain opens, Upstage stage left setting is an exterior office with a receptionist seated at a desk. Two men dressed in business suits enter. Obviously excited they enter talking.]
Mr. Lamb: Absolutely stunning! He arrived from the Home office only an hour ago and already things are changing!
Mr. Kidd: Did you get a load of the entourage? How many exec’s from Home office do you think there were?
[The receptionist interrupts their conversation]
Receptionist: Excuse me gentlemen, gentlemen? [They turn to her] HE will see you now.
[Center stage is a desk with a man seated at it. Two chairs one on the right, one on the left. Mr. Lamb and Mr. Kidd enter]
Christ: [indicating the right chair] Mr. Lamb. [Indicating the left chair] Mr. Kidd, please have a seat.
[He looks through some papers as Mr. Kidd speaks]
Mr. Kidd: Sir, let me welcome you back from the Home office. We, I PERSONALLY am very happy that you have returned.
Christ: [non-committal] Uh huh. Well, today IS the day isn’t it?
You two have been responsible for this project since I left to go to the Home office.
[Again glancing at the papers on His desk]
Mr. Lamb, I want to congratulate you! Every assignment given to you, you passed with flying colors.
Mr. Lamb: [somewhat confused] Uh, Sir what assignments? As far as I can tell I have just operated business as usual.
Christ: No, it is clearly stated here, “When you saw me hungry and thirsty you fed me and gave me something to drink.”
[Now really confused.]
Mr. Lamb: Sir, How could that be? You have been at the Home office for years and I have not left this regional office once.
[Mr. Kidd interrupts]
Mr. Kidd: You know I’m kind of hungry my self………[looking to Christ] How about you sir? After the meeting we do lunch. I’ll buy.
[Christ simply looks at Mr. Kidd as if to say “Sit down Mr. Kidd.”]
Christ: [Turning back to Mr. Lamb] Mr. Lamb my records indicate that you faithfully participated in the annual food drive here at Regional. Is that not so?
Mr. Lamb: Well yes, but……
Christ: In addition, it has become your habit to invite out of town visitors to our regional office often putting them up in your own home. Is this true?
Mr. Kidd: [under his breath] I told you’d get burned for that one.
Mr. Lamb: Well, yes, Sir. But the Home office directive clearly indicated that we were to extend courtesy to visitors.
Christ: That is correct [turning abruptly to Mr. K] Mr. Kidd, You on the other hand saw me in need of clothing and ignored this fact.
Mr. Kidd: Now wait a minute, I protest Sir. Just like Mr. Lamb here, I haven’t left the regional office for years. Besides how in the world can you expect me to know what size you wear?
Christ: Is it not also true Mr. Kidd that despite the fact that you knew that I was sick you never bothered to visit me? Mr. Kidd with the exception of mandatory weekly corporate meetings and the occasional seminar you have not completed one assignment I have given you.
Mr. Kidd: Where is the memo? I never received any clear directive indicating that these were MY assignments.
Christ: During the weekly Corporate meetings both of you [looking at one then the other] were told to expect surprise assignments. Situations for which, had you read your employee manual, [Looking at Mr. Kidd] you would have been prepared.
[Turning to Mr. Lamb]
Mr. Lamb, as I said when you first entered my office, you have done well. Because of your willingness to take initiative and act on the Policy established by our CEO you have earned a well deserved promotion. I am happy to tell you that you are moving to the Home office. Your benefits packet includes a clear deed to a new home, paid for personally by me, a new title of vice president, and the best health plan ever given to any employee. [Standing up to shake Mr. Lamb’s hand] Well done, Sir! Well done.
[Turning to Mr. Kidd]
Christ: Mr. Kidd, your total disregard for our mission is a disgrace! Mr. Kidd, You are fired!
Narrator: “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then will He sit on His glorious throne. And all the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separated the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. {pause} “………….Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you…………” “………Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.” Matthew 25:31-34 & 40
